Information about Riptide Rugby Club
History
Pembroke Pines Riptide Rugby Football Club was first established in 2009 by current president and vice-president, Chris Muñoz and Gorm Stokkland. We became the first and only Non-for-Profit Rugby organization based out of Pembroke Pines, Florida. The team consisted of mostly high school football team mates and friends that wanted to continue to play sports after college.
2009 was a challenging year for the team. Because of the struggling economy and the youth of the team, sponsorships were difficult to come by, and many team members moved out of the area in search of job opportunities. The planned expansion from a 7′s team to a 15′s team was put on indefinite halt, as we restructured the team around a 7′s base to draw support from the local community.
2010 proved to be a very successful year. Our support base grew and the players made it a goal to secure a future for our club, a goal that was achieved. With a semi-final finish in the Surfin’ Sevens tournament and a groing reputation as a physical and dangerous team, the Riptide made some serious waves (pun absolutely intended) in 2010.
2011 Looking to build off of our success in 2010, the Riptide is poised to capture its first piece of hardware this summer. Our eyes are set on finishing what we started at last season’s Surfin’ Sevens tournament. With the addition of three college players and return of our core members, the roster now has its most potent blend of speed and power to date. Will the Tide be able to utilize its new found talent and make a serious impact on the Florida rugby circuit? To be continued…
The Organization
Pembroke Pines Riptide Rugby Football Club is driven by the community. We have continuously relied on the support of our contributors and fans to be successful, and have based our entire organization around giving back. Our players have grown up in the community, developed life-long friendships here, and work at your schools and local establishments.
We are planning to attend and run community events, and thank all of you for the continued support in our matches across the state of Florida!
