2012 Riptide Rugby 7′s Roster

# 14 Josh R

Scrum-Half, Winger

After having spent time in New Zealand playing rugby, Josh is stateside again. Currently playing for Fort Lauderdale, this summer he will reprise the role that made him famous in the Florida rugby community: scrum-half  for Pembroke Pines Riptide Rugby (and confused hispanic).

# 8 Chris Muñoz

Fly-Half, Prop

The Riptide Captain is currently recovering from an ACL injury sustained in the finals of last year’s Sunshine Sevens tournament. However, he is looking to be back on the pitch this summer, leading his mates (who he loves very much) to the top of Florida rugby. With his moustache, flowing hair, strength, and somewhat acceptable speed, El Capitan does his best to demonstrate what Riptide Rugby is all about: We’re flashy and ridiculous, but we’ll hurt you.

# 1 Luis Lopez

Hooker, Prop

The muscle of the group, “Pug” is a competitive powerlifter and facial hair aficionado. His work ethic in the weight room is an inspiration to the entire team, making Pug one of the most important and valuable members of the Tide. Pug took over as Captain for the Tide last summer after the injury to Muñoz, and did a phenomenal job leading the team through the remaining tournaments. Under his leadership, the Tide put up a point differential of +92 at the Surfin’ Sevens tournament in West Palm Beach.

# 11 David Lopez

Hooker, Center

“Sweet D” missed all of last season due to a serious lower leg injury sustained during pre-season training. Before the injury though, he was the starting center for the Tide and our enforcer on the pitch; no one tackles better or hits harder. While he may not come out and say it, Sweet D would do anything for his mates.

# 10 Rick Clark

Prop, Hooker

The “Ten Man” is so named not because he’s good looking, because he isn’t; nor is he so called because he’s from Tennessee, he’s from Ohio…Actually, we aren’t really sure why we call him that. What we do know is that he’s always the first one to show up for training and the last one to leave. Rick Clark is the best teammate anyone could ask for…until he panics and runs towards a defender while on a breakaway run.

# 9 Jon Berkowitz

Winger, Scrum-Half

While he may or may not work for the FBI, Jon’s disappearing acts both on and off the pitch are legendary. Opposing scrum halves and ruckers had better pay attention when he is pulling the ball out, or the next thing they know Jon will be hanging out in the try zone. He’ll also be talking to the ref to make sure he/she didn’t stop the match because getting to the try zone  was so easy.

# 7 Nick Riveira

Center

He doesn’t talk much, and doesn’t practice very often either, but Nicky was probably the best athlete out of any Tide member (eight years ago) . He’s still squeezing out every last drop of his natural ability, and just on that he’s able to perform at a very high level for the Tide (if only for a few minutes).

# 3 Stephen Lopez

Center, Prop

Felicity, the team wild card. Steveee runs so hard that he injures himself, which is fascinating to watch. He spins moves and shoulder charges his way through tackles with ease, often cementing his spot atop the highlight reel for every tournament. Everyone knows about #3 for the Tide, not only for of how hard he runs, but also because of how hard he hits.

# 5 Gonzalez

Prop, Jester

With a nerve of steel and the beard of a warrior poet, the one we call “Nacho”, has neglected his rugby skill development in exchange for weekend missions with GreenPeace (not true) and teaching Justin Beiber the ways of women (sort of true).

# 14 Gorm Stokkland

Winger, Center

Gorm is the one member of the team who is constantly transfixed by the greatest of life’s questions… WHY? That being said, he is one of the co-founders of the team and probably has the most enviable body in Broward county (not that we care or anything) due to his incessant need to participate in triathlons.

# 13 Michael Hervis

Center, Winger

Easily the most athletic person in the world who also drives a Mini Cooper, Mike Hervis came on to the rugby scene last year while playing for his college team (and our annual warm-up team) the FIU Golden Panthers. In only one season with the Tide, he has cemented himself as an integral part of our backline and first side.

#15 Ryan Moran

Fly-Half, Scrum- Half

Finally making the jump from his college side to the Tide after years of recruiting efforts, “Fresh” made his mark as the missing link in this team’s backline. He has the unfortunate habit of playing drunk, but he is still pretty good.

# 12 Jorge Evora

Center, Winger

Jorge joined the Tide last summer. He provided the team with a surprisingly powerful weapon in the backline that we sorely needed. Combined with Hervis, there is no better Center/Wing combination in Florida. In all honesty, we assumed he was going to suck.

#4 Don Sachs

Forward

Officially the youngest and most socially awkward member of the team, Don made great strides last season as is developing into an effective player and less socially awkward human being. That being said, Don’s work ethic is something to be admired and emulated.

Give Blood. Play Rugby.
